COMMONWEALTH , DELHI 2012 BATON RELAY - VOLLEYBALL PRESENT
[Sun, 10 January 2010]

On Sunday, 10 January 2010 the Commwealth Baton arrived in Cape Town which included Heideveld as part of its relay route.  Delhi, SASCOC, Department of Sport and Recreation, sport celebrities, spectators, friends and family members gathered to cheer and honour all the sport celebrities who participated.  The baton have travelled through a number of European countries and will do so throughout Africa symbolizing the importance of sport through friendship, teamwork, pride and honor for our sportspersons.

Volleyball representatives included were Loet Groenewald, Cantor Africa and Adrian (Gosh) Striydom.  The volleyball fraternity of Cape Town is proud of their achievements at club, provincial, national and international level which motivated the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, and in particular Mr. Bennette Bailey who also grew up in

Heideveld, to include them in the process.   Volleyball in Heideveld has

certainly prospered at the highest level and could only have been done with the support of this community over the years.

WPVU would like to wish Team South Africa all the best with their preparation for the 2012 Commonwealth Games to take place in Delhi.

Submitted by Mrs. Ilhaam Groenewald

SP Beach League
[Thu, 10 December 2009]

Hi all, herewith the update for the SP. Beach league males senior. The league now sits at 12 males’ teams and growing. We however have to close off this weekend because we have only 1 weekend left and that will be the 9-10 of January 2010. For those who wish to play and don’t have a partner, come along and you can help those players whose partners can’t make it for that day.

Some real talent has been discovered during the past weeks of play. The youth boys who came and registered to play 4 a side, were split into teams of 2 a side, and where thrown in at the deep end. These boy’s from the sports school displayed some fantastic skill and technique during their games. The partnerships of Miles-Cheslyn and Dean-Carlo showed that they are the future of Beach volleyball by taking some scalps of more seasoned players. They were however given a baptism of fire by being drawn against Grant-Freedom and Clint- Ricky respectively for their first matches, but they rose to the challenge only lacking the experience needed for this tough sport.

The junior section has also grown by 2 teams, Zerilda park and first timers Wescott primary joined this past Saturday. All the youngsters had an enjoyable time playing beach volleyball.

Come down to Muizenberg and join the fun this Saturday.

Pleeeeease to all players be there by 09h00 and don’t forget to bring your registration fees.

Thanks Mark Williams

For South Peninsula Volleyball Club.
