On Sunday, 10 January 2010 the Commwealth Baton arrived in Cape Town which included Heideveld as part of its relay route. Delhi, SASCOC, Department of Sport and Recreation, sport celebrities, spectators, friends and family members gathered to cheer and honour all the sport celebrities who participated. The baton have travelled through a number of European countries and will do so throughout Africa symbolizing the importance of sport through friendship, teamwork, pride and honor for our sportspersons.
Volleyball representatives included were Loet Groenewald, Cantor Africa and Adrian (Gosh) Striydom. The volleyball fraternity of Cape Town is proud of their achievements at club, provincial, national and international level which motivated the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, and in particular Mr. Bennette Bailey who also grew up in
Heideveld, to include them in the process. Volleyball in Heideveld has
certainly prospered at the highest level and could only have been done with the support of this community over the years.
WPVU would like to wish Team South Africa all the best with their preparation for the 2012 Commonwealth Games to take place in Delhi.
