SP Beach League Update 03/01/2009

The SP Beach league enters its final leg this weekend with all the pool matches excepting one being concluded, in the senior ladies pool, between Leo/Chantal and Silja/Irene. This match will also determine the top four.

The first matches this Saturday will be to determine the queen and king of the beach. These matches will be contested between the teams ending 1 and 2 in the league, they will have to swap partners and play and determine the single highest point scorer.

In the ladies section the players involved are Emma, Natasha, Nicole and Randy, the males are Grant, Clint, Lloyd and Darren.

Other matches over the weekend will be the males top eight and ladies top four double elimination tournament, the junior top four double elimination and the pro-am tournament, where junior teams ending lower than forth will be split up and paired with senior players who in the ladies section ended lower than forth and in the males section ending lower than 8^th. The latter section will be open to anyone who was not in the league originally.

All these different events will take place at Muizenberg beach from 09h00 on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 January 2009.

A presentation ceremony will be held after the events are concluded, hope to see you all there.

WPSAPS Heathfield Primary Beach Volleyball Tournament 20/21 December 2008

This inaugural tournament saw some of the best beach volleyballers in the province participate.

A valiant organizational effort put in by the executive of WPSAPS lead by their administrator Jannine Smit (first VP WPVU) who decided on the last minute to provide some beach activity for the players over the December period.

One could not have asked for a better weekend of beach volleyball, organized right down to the weather.

The tournament was contested in both women and men section with the eventual winners and runners up as follows…

In the women’s section

Tercia Daniels/Amelia Luyt proved too strong for the pairing of Wadee Fakier/Lorelle Marshall who eventually succumbed 21-10, 21-15

In the men’s section

 Grant Goldschmidt/Clint Stemmet, our potential Olympic hopefuls, put up their hands to say “We are here, and we want it”. Overcame team Jerome Fredericks/Ivan Solomons, seasoned veterans, 21-12, 21-15, in a thrilling encounter in which Jerome Fredericks/Ivan Solomons had no answer for the unusual composure of a very youthful team.

A word of thanks needs to go out to WPSAPS for organizing what everyone says was a sensational weekend of beach volleyball. I hope to see more of these types of initiatives and definitely more use of this wonderful venue.
