Geographical Area the Club Covers
The geographical area that the All Star Saints Volleyball Club covers is mainly Mitchell’s Plain as well as surrounding areas such as Heideveld, Retreat and Steenberg. We have also been fortunate to have players involved from as far as Eerste River. Currently we are one of two volleyball clubs that are actively involved in these areas and we plan to extend our footprint to other neighbouring areas such as Khayalitsha, Samora Marcel, and areas where  it make practical sense to  start  volleyball initiatives.

Providing a positive and constructive social alternative.
We want to increase the rate of sports development, in conjunction with Western Province Volleyball Union. We would also want our players to continue to participate competitively at a local, national and international level. The club provides a platform for excellence through which we aim to develop competent sports individuals and to make a contribution to human and social development potential within the broader context of South Africa.

The achievements  to date  has been  phenomenal with  by  many  of the younger  players  have already  participated frequently at  international  competitions. Allow me to introduce you to the Amathuba Volleyball Club.

Amathuba meaning 'Opportunity'

The club was birthed in  January 2005  in the greater Western Cape Northern Suburbs, covering areas such as Delft, KuilsRiver, Kraaifontein and Belhar. We started out with one team, participating in the Western Province volleyball Union. Most of our members have a wealth of experience  and have participated at Provincial Level, as well as representing our country at international tertiary/student volleyball events. This include representing the sport on various sport bodies in the region.

OUR MISSION

  • To help develop a dying sport that's been around for many years
  • Enthuse teachers to teaching volleyball at school level again by coaching them first so they can teach the learners
  • Teaching children the importance of sport so they can have better health and well-being
  • Make use of the sport to help get children off the street and possibly drugs as well
  • Being role models to show success through what we do and what we have achieved so they too can aspire to be successful
  • Create opportunity for the kids to travel the world through sport participation

OUR GOALS

  • To be the top club in the country
  • To travel overseas to play against other clubs (professionally)
  • To play in the African Club Championships
  • To grow volleyball so players can be rewarded financially
  • To enrich those who have no hope in themselves

Our focus is development, skills transfer and active volleyball participation, as such, improving the quality of life.Another reason for attracting more members is the influx of new blood. With an unchanging membership, play and attitudes may become stagnant. An influx of new players changes all that, and the club is likely to be healthier for it. In addition, more players will lead to increased funding, better facilities and ultimately better players and teams.

The club aims to attract a wide range of learners originating from different cultural backgrounds. The Club takes confined commitment to development of volleyball in terms of aspects such as democracy, equality, sportsmanship, skill, excellence and community building.

The club was founded in 1998 in the Southern Peninsula area. The players were mainly drawn from the Steenberg,Heathfield, Retreat, Lavenderhill and Grassy Park areas. The club was formed to save volleyball in the region, although the area boasted some of the top clubs in the country, during the 1980’s, i.e. Black Panthers, Hurricanes, Retreat and Collegians, none of these clubs had any development programme.

At the beginning of 1998, none of the abovementioned clubs had enough members to register teams with Western Province Volleyball Union. A meeting was held with the remaining players, and the South Peninsula Volleyball club was born. It was decided in that meeting that an intensive development programme had to be embarked upon if we were to maintain a strong club. We started recruiting youngsters from the surrounding schools and coached them every Monday and Wednesday at the Cafda hall and on Saturdays at the Rooikraans hall in Grassy Park... Most of them had no formal coaching at that stage. After working with these youngsters for two years, we registered them with the WPVU as a junior team, but because there was no junior, or second division they had to play against the seniors. Some of the players in that team were, Randy Williams , Taryn Papier, Tercia Daniels, Sheena and Shana Abrahams, Safiya Bufkins to mention a few.

Our efforts finally paid off in 2003, when we won the senior Western Province volleyball league, with a team that consisted of 80% of the players under the age of 18. Two of our players won the MVP award at the end of that season. Tercia Daniels won the junior MVP and Lamees Abrahams won the senior MVP at the tender age of 16.

We are a club that has a serious development programme, so in the event that our senior players stop playing due to work or pregnancy we have our junior players to replace them. We are currently building our third crop of players and have some real talented 12 and 13 year old girls, and are also preparing our forth crop who are between ages 9-11.

In 2005 we realised that starting to develop a player at the age of 14 was a bit late and decided to move the club from Cafda to Seawinds (Lavernder Hill) right next to Zerilda Park primary school who we adopted. This paid off tremendously, we brought the sports co-ordinater from the school into the club and taught him to coach and in return he identifies the talent at the school and then brings them to the club. We are now producing up to 50% of the school volleyball u/12 and u/13 provincial girls teams and identifying them early so that if they go to a high school that does not have Volleyball they still stay in the code because of their involvement with the club.

Last year we took our development even further by enrolling 8 of the 15 grade sevens at one school, (Steenberg High) which means that school will immediately have a competitive team with the added bonus of being fed by new players from Zerilda park primary every year. An unexpected spin off is that the players who did not go to Steenberg high went to Zwaanswyk high and that means that there is another potential school team and that they still all come and practise at the club on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 pm.

To this day we can proudly say that we have manufactured all our players and have never asked players from other clubs to come and join us. Players manufactured at this club include.

Volleyball has always been popular in the Western Cape and the province has been the leaders in development of the game for many years. The UWC Volleyball Club was established in the late 80’s when the country was in heavy political turmoil. Members were however determined to establish the club as a force to be reckoned with, both administratively and competitively. Since then, the club has managed to stay in the top rankings both on Tertiary as well as National League level, winning a number of local and national tournaments We have produced a number of National team players of which; the likes of Lee Ann Naidoo ( 2004 Beach Volleyball Olympian).

Sport is far more than a luxury or a form of entertainment. Access to and participation in sport is a human right and essential for individuals of all ages to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Sport – from play and physical activity to organised competitive sport – has an important role in all societies. Sport is critical to a child or in this case, a student’s development. It teaches core values such as co-operation, discipline and respect. It improves health and reduces the likelihood of disease. It is a significant economic force providing employment and contributing to local development. It brings individuals and communities together, bridging cultural and ethnic divides.
